Sargassum Barrier Project Update

We want to share with you the most recent advances of the Sargassum Deflector Barrier project.

According to the information provided by Okeanis- Inmar Caribe, the company responsible for the manufacturing, supply, installation, and maintenance of the barrier, the shipment to Puerto Aventuras is scheduled for next August 1.

We know that this is a highly anticipated project by the entire community. However, it is important to note that the manufacturing, logistics, and importation timelines depend directly on the supplying company and are processes that are outside the control of the Colonists' Association. Nevertheless, we maintain ongoing communication with Okeanis to follow up on the project and timely inform the community about each advance.

As previously reported, the maintenance fee for the barrier began to be charged during this quarter.

During the General Assembly in March 2026, the community approved this fee with the aim of covering the operational and maintenance costs of the barrier once installed. However, the current situation has made it necessary to start addressing beach cleaning tasks that will be essential for the project's operation.

For this reason, the Board of Directors, elected by the colonists in that Assembly, decided to temporarily allocate these resources to cleaning and Sargassum removal work, allowing for a specific fund to address this need while the barrier arrives in Puerto Aventuras and begins its operation.

This decision responds to an operational reality: currently there is no budget item allocated exclusively to finance these extraordinary tasks, which are essential to keep our beaches in the best possible condition.

Additionally, a significant change in operations has recently occurred. Due to union regulations, the staff of the Colonos Association will no longer be able to directly collect sargassum on the beach, so it will be necessary to hire specialized personnel and services to continue these tasks. This represents an additional cost that must be covered to maintain the cleanliness of our coasts.

Temporarily allocating these resources to beach cleaning will allow continuity of these tasks while the barrier is installed and becomes operational, contributing to the project's goal of reducing the arrival of sargassum and protecting our beaches.
