The fauna of Puerto Aventuras: coexist, respect, and protect

Puerto Aventuras is not only home to people, it is also home to an incredible diversity of species that are a fundamental part of our ecosystem.

Within our community, there are terrestrial species, birds, and marine fauna that coexist with us daily and make this place a truly unique environment. Thanks to the work and monitoring of the Fauna Committee, species such as raccoons, coatis, spider monkeys, jaguars, toucans, herons, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and many more have been identified.

Each of these species plays an important role in the natural balance:

🦝 Raccoons and coatis help disperse seeds and keep the ecosystem healthy.

🐒 Spider monkeys are essential for the regeneration of the jungle.

🐆 The jaguar and jaguarundi are key species that indicate the environmental health of the region.

🦜 Birds like toucans, parrots, and woodpeckers participate in seed dispersal and insect control.

🐢 Sea turtles, manatees, and reef fish are an essential part of our marine ecosystems.

It is also important to remember that there are different species of snakes in the region, including some that are venomous. Snakes play a fundamental role in the ecosystem as they help control populations of rodents and other species.

In case you observe a snake:

  • Always maintain a safe distance
  • Do not attempt to touch, move, or capture it
  • Allow trained personnel to carry out the appropriate relocation
  • Report any sightings to the Wildlife Committee- +52 55 2900 4393

Many species of wildlife cross streets and roads, especially at night or during rainy seasons. Therefore, it is very important to drive carefully and respect the maximum speed limit of 30 km/h within Puerto Aventuras, thus helping to protect both people and wildlife.

Many of these species feed on fruits, seeds, insects, fish, or small animals, and rest in trees, mangroves, jungles, reefs, and coastal areas. Some are nocturnal and others are especially sensitive to noise, artificial light, or human presence.

As a community, we can help in many ways:

  • Do not feed wild animals
  • Maintain a respectful distance
  • Do not attempt to touch or capture them
  • Reduce trash and plastics on streets and beaches
  • Respect natural areas and mangroves
  • Drive carefully and respect the 30 km/h limit
  • Report sightings or risky situations to trained personnel

Responsible coexistence is key to protecting the biodiversity of Puerto Aventuras and conserving the natural balance that makes our community so special.

Caring for wildlife is also caring for our home. 💙
